THE REMARKABLE RAY JOHNSON EXHIBITION "CORRESPONDENCES"
WHICH OPENED AT THE WHITNEY MUSEUUM OF ART IN 1997
ACTUALLY HAD ITS ORIGINS AT THE WEXNER CENTER OF THE ARTS IN
COLUMBUS, OHIO. IT WAS CURATED BY DONNA DE SALVO AND
A MAJOR COFFEE TABLE BOOK WITH BEAUTIFUL PLATES OF JOHNSON'S
WORK
WAS PUBLISHED BY FLAMMARION. AFTER ITS WHITNEY RUN, IN
SEPTEMBER 2000,
WHEN THE EXHIBITION WAS READY TO OPEN WHERE IT
HAD ORIGINATED
IN COLUMBUS, SOME TWO DOZEN MAIL ARTISTS
DESCENDED UPON THE
CITY FOR A PANEL DISCUSSION MODERATED BY
MARK BLOCH AND AN ADJACENT
MAIL ART EXHIBIT "THE ART IS IN THE MAIL"
CURATED BY MARK AND MEL "FA GA GA GA" COROTTO WHO INVITED
ALL TAKERS TO THEIR HOME FOR A "RAY JOHNSON" CELBRITY ROAST TO KICK
OFF THE FESTIVITIES. AS LUCK WOULD HAVE IT, THERE WAS ALSO A LOCAL
ESTABLISHMENT
CALLED THE "RAY JOHNSON FISH MARKET" IN COLUMBUS.
